What Does Your Watch Say About You?

What Does Your Watch Say About You?

When I first began my watch ownership journey at the tender and impressionable age of 13, owning a watch felt like a big moment. It was the first time I was given personal responsibility over an item of considerable value—both in a monetary sense and in terms of what it represented. A watch is not just an object; it’s the responsibility of time itself. The excuse of “I didn’t know the time, which is why I was late” was no longer valid.

My first watch, a Seiko Sports 100, is still in my collection today, going strong. Over the years, many watches have come and gone, each with its own story, but the idea of what a watch says about its wearer has only grown in significance—especially with the rise of a new and ever-fascinating generation of collectors.

A Statement on the Wrist

First, let’s eliminate the smartwatch from this discussion. In our opinion, it’s a wrist computer, not a watch. Sitting in a London Underground carriage a few weeks ago, I was struck by the sheer number of Apple Watches surrounding me. I’m sure they say something about their wearers, but one thing is certain—they are not an expression of individuality, history, or personality in the way a traditional watch can be.

There is no doubt that people do wrist-check, even those who claim to be uninterested in watches. A watch is a statement, intentional or not. It can be a subtle nod to personal taste, a marker of success, or a reminder of an important relationship. Whether it’s a beloved family heirloom, a gift from a loved one, or a watch you bought yourself to celebrate a milestone, your choice of timepiece carries meaning.

For us, not wearing a watch is like looking at a blank piece of paper or enduring an awkward silence—something is missing.

The Ultimate Expression

At Helicon Watches, our approach to watchmaking is built on this very philosophy. The Helicon Master was created with the best design, materials, and craftsmanship we could find, in very limited numbers. It represents our ultimate expression of what a watch should be.

So, what about you? What’s your ultimate expression watch, and what does it say about you?
