When we set out to build the Helicon Professional Chronograph, we knew we wanted a movement that offered both reliability and a rewarding user experience. That’s why we chose the Seiko VK series — a clever piece of watchmaking that blends the best of mechanical and quartz technology.
But what exactly is it?
A Modern Hybrid: Mecha-Quartz Explained
The Seiko VK series is what’s known as a “hybrid” or “mecha-quartz” movement. Introduced around a decade ago, it’s become a popular choice among watch enthusiasts — and for good reason.
Traditional chronograph movements (watches with stopwatch functionality) are made up of two main components:
• The timekeeping module – responsible for keeping accurate time.
• The chronograph module – which controls the stopwatch functions (start, stop, and reset).
In most quartz chronographs, both modules are powered and controlled electronically. Tiny stepper motors operate the chronograph functions, making them smooth but lacking the tactile feel of mechanical watches.
Mechanical Action, Quartz Precision
Here’s where the VK series stands out: while the timekeeping part of the movement is quartz (battery-powered for consistent accuracy), the chronograph module is mechanical.
That means the start, stop, and reset functions are operated by traditional mechanical levers and cams — the kind you’d find in high-end mechanical watches.
So What’s the Benefit?
This hybrid design brings some serious advantages:
Tactile Feel – The chronograph pushers have a crisp, mechanical click. Pressing them feels satisfyingly precise — a world away from the soft mushiness of standard quartz.
Instant Chronograph Reset – When you reset the stopwatch, the seconds hand snaps straight back to 12 o’clock — no slow sweep or delay.
Low Maintenance – Because it’s quartz-powered, you avoid the full servicing schedules (and costs) of a mechanical chronograph. Just a battery change every few years and a quick inspection will keep things running smoothly.
Cost-Effective – You get the performance and feel of a mechanical chronograph without the high price tag.
A Smarter Choice, Built in the UK
In short, the Seiko VK series is practical, robust, and a joy to use — a movement that delivers mechanical character without the complexity. It was the natural choice for the Helicon Mustard Chronograph, allowing us to create a watch that’s as enjoyable to wear as it is reliable to own.
